  • For several years, Paul Kooiker and Erik Kessels have organized evenings for friends in which they share the strangest photo books in their collections. The books shown are rarely available in regular shops, but are picked up in thrift stores and from antiquaries. The group’s fascination for these pictorial non-fiction books comes from the need to find images that exist on the fringe of regular commercial photo books. It’s only in this area that it’s possible to find images with an uncontrived quality. What’s noticeable from these publications is that there’s a thin line between being terrible and being awesome. This constant tension makes the books interesting. It’s also worth noting that these tomes all fall within certain categories: the medical, instructional, scientific, sex, humour or propaganda. Paul Kooiker and Erik Kessels have made a selection of their finest books from within this questionable new genre.

    Bei der vorliegenden Thematik ist es plausibel, einen Pressetext zu schreiben, der davon handelt, dass Pressetexte über Selbstreferenzialität & Sprache in der Kunst auf irgendeinen selbstreferenziellen Witz hinaus laufen sollten.
    Auf jeden Fall muss er hermetisch geschlossen sein, als Klammer des Ganzen, und eben auf sich selbst verweisen anhand der Sprache, der Wörter, die er benutzt, und idealer Weise läuft es auf ein Paradoxon hinaus, also im Prinzip, wenn man sich das dann ansieht, ist es ziemlich banal und flach, wenn sich die ganze Satzmacherei einzig und allein um sich selbst dreht.
    Diese Nabelschau kann, ja Sie muss sich natürlich mit Geschnatter von analytischer Sprachtheorie aufplustern, denn es handelt sich ja bei allem selbst um eine Metaebene, in der ja aber Selbstreferenzialität nur vorliegen kann, wenn diese in der Struktur stattfindet, über die sie spricht. Wünschenswerter Weise handelt es sich also um ein Kunstwerk selbst, eh eine Tautologie, hier um eine sprachliche, also dann auf einer Meta-Metaebene , was im Ergebnis dann schon fast einfältig dumm wirkt, und sich die Frage der Sinnlosigkeit des Unterfangens selbst aufdrängt.
    Um theoretisch an diesen Punkt zu gelangen und dabei alle Voraussetzungen erfüllen zu müssen, ist tierisch kompliziert und das Hirn hat sich schon wund gedacht, es blutet aus den Ohren. Und wenn dieses entstandene Werk, einer Tautologieprüfung unterzogen wird, nach Prinzipien der Logik, eben die Erfüllbarkeit der Aussagenlogik seiner selbst, so ist der Tautologie der Logik nach ein solcher Pressetext über Selbstreferenzialität anhand sprachlicher Mittel UNMÖGLICH.
    Ergo gibt es ihn nicht, die Unmöglichkeit der Entstehung dieses Pressetextes ist somit bewiesen und er existiert nicht.
    Logisch.
    Quod erat demonstrandum.

    Yury Ustsinau an artist, designer and illustrator residing in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Born in 1979 in Vitebsk, Belarus, the hometown of world-known artist Marc Chagall. Graduate from Vitebsk Technological University, with a degree in Product Design. He works as commercial illustrator and continues his passion for art in his private time. Much of his work is found in private collections an various pieces have been represented in galleries and art exhibitions. He has also success-fully participated in many competitions.
    Starting off with traditional illustrations, Yury Ustsinau knew that he wanted to create his own special world. His first hands into a dialog. Subsequently special lighting was added, which allowed the forms to become more flexible. Yury has developed an amazing distinguished personal style where surrealism is rendered in black and white a unique glossy feel.

    She has published over forty books that are exhibited widely and held in numerous private and public collections including the Centre Pompidou, Columbia University, Getty Museum, Kunstbibliothek Berlin, MoMA Library, New York Public Library, Tate Library and the Walker Art Center. Much of her work involves responding to existing books, texts and images, reworking them into new (visual) literature.   • Recto, Verso is the latest attempt to grasp the magnitude of the monumental archive of photograms that Robert Heinecken created during the past 40 years. In this current sampling, comprised of work from his own archive, Heinecken offers a look back at the decade of the 1980s, where decadence and narcissism inhabit the same space as spirituality and family values. Though the patinas of these color photograms speak of that generation, their revelations are contemporary in their incisiveness. In looking at the history of the photogram, beginning with Henry Fox Talbot’s ‘photogenic drawings’ and Man Ray’s ‘Rayographs’, Heinecken must be viewed as its most rebellious practitioner – unflinching, enigmatic and alert. Robert Heinecken’s work has been widely exhibited in the United States, Europe and Asia, and is included in many major collections, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. LA County Museum of Art. and the Center for Creative Photography, Tucson. Recto/Verso is printed in a first edition of 1,000 casebound copies, with an introduction by Rod Slemmons, Director of the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago.
